Episode 405 / Slippery When Wet

Seas the Day! It’s Monster Surfing Time! A few months have passed since our last all-surf music show, so for the first time in 2022, here’s “Slippery When Wet”, an assortment of more tunes of a wet & wild persuasion. We start off with Vancouver guitarist, Wailin’ Al Walker, who delves into the surfin’ vocabulary with his recent single, “Freedom Rock”.

As is our usual custom, we continue to present surf music old and new, from vintage tunes courtesy of the Lively Ones, the Astronauts and The Hondells, to modern interpretations from the Bambi Molesters, Los Straitjackets and Satan’s Pilgrims to name but a few.

Episode 404 / The Who Covered

Maximum R&B on this week’s Captain Maniac Show! Although Episode 404 can be considered one of our popular “theme” shows, the premise this time out is cover songs of one particular band — namely, The Who. Multitudes of various artists have performed songs by The Who, from Rush to Taj Mahal, from The Ramones to Van Halen, from Bun E. Carlos to David Bowie — and even Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. Also included in tonight’s program are selections from The Smithereens’ tribute to the Who album “Tommy”, as well as Green Day’s version of A Quick One While He’s Away. We have chosen not to repeat songs in this episode, which means that rather than have the Breeders’ version of “So Sad About Us”, we instead bring you the Jam playing their rendition of that particular song. Let’s go on an Amazing Journey!

1 Rush – The Seeker
2 Petra Haden – Heinz Baked Beans
3 Scorpions – I Can’t Explain
4 Sweet – My Generation

Episode 403 / The Good The Bad and the Ugly

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly on the Captain Maniac Show! This week we present an accumulation of songs with either of the words good, bad or ugly in the title, so we start off suitably with Good Thing by Paul Revere & The Raiders. Loretta Lynn & Conway Twitty later do a duet on You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly, a song which definitely belongs in our upcoming “Get Off the Stove You’re Too Old To Ride the Range” show (comprised of mostly country songs with hilarious titles), but we included it in this episode because it had the word “ugly” as the subject matter.

One of the highlights of this week’s show is the original version of You’re No Good by Dee Dee Warwick (sister of Dionne Warwick), a song that was covered by both The Swinging Blue Jeans and Van Halen! I May Be Ugly But I Sure Know How to Cook…
